Amazing Sweatshirts!

The ambitious project of Sweatshirts by some of my students last semester ended with amazing finished products!  One of my 8th graders had taken the class 3 time already and so I challenged him with coming up with a project of his own. He and two others decided on sweatshirts and with the assistance of a tutorial by WITHWENDY. They killed it.  We have a workout hoodie and two all the time hoodies. They worked together to  make the patterns, cut the pieces, sew them together and coached each other through different phases of the project. I am so proud of them. Furthermore, their music, the speakers one of the got for the classroom, and their upbeat attitudes were so fabulous to have in the room.  They will be missed.

Our Names As Signs

We looked up the signs we wanted to use to represent us on SigningSavvy

It was fun, and Sam is the real expert.

Watch our VIDEO of us doing our own signs.

I chose Elephant because I love elephants so much. They are so soft and elegant but big and strong.
-Nella

I chose Big Slow Sloth because sloths are my favorite animal. They are very slow and some are pretty big.
-Jacob

I chose Shy because I'm shy.
-Serenity

I chose Sun and Moon because I love the sky and meteorology and astronomy.
-Mia

I chose Turtleneck because I like to wear them.
-Stacey

I chose Christmas Tree because I love Christmas!
-Holden

I chose Hilarious because I'm funny.
-Haileigh

I stayed with S-A-M.
-Sam

Mrs.Hubbard chose Outrageous because she's outrageous.

Sign Language

Today, we wrote our names on a paper and also cut out sign language that represented our letters and put them under our name.

Sam taught the rest of our class how to do the signs.

According to an article we read, many people make up a sign specific to their name instead of having to do the letters everytime they say their name.

Those of us who are verbal think it would be challenging to be unable to speak and to have to do sign language.  However, we realize those who are non-verbal and use sign language don't even have to think about it because Sign is their first language.  However, as verbal speakers, we think it would be hard to learn and use regularly.

Also, according to the article, you could use a sign that represents your personality such as giggly or sunshine.

We had fun!
