7/8 Chickens, Bats, and Ghosts! Oh my!

When I started  I was told I could make my own design.  Having chickens, I wanted to do a chicken.  My chicken is based off one of the chickens I own. I had a lot of fun making  my chicken.

I wanted to make a bat because for our science class we had the choice of making a model bat so I decided to make an Orange Leaf Nosed Bat for science.

7 Pottage and Trebuchet Video

It has been a fun and fantastic week in 7th grade these last weeks. We have castle projects going on, trebuchets being launched, presentations being presented, and food being cooked and served.

Here is a video of the Trebuchet Launch:  Trebuchet Video

Below are some photos of Pottage being made for Renesance Night food.  Pottage was the classic commoner food duirn the middle ages, and is made with cracked wheat, almond milk, and water. Students ground the wheat and made the almond milk from scrath.

The wheat and grinder.  Whole grain wheat on the right, cracked wheat in the middle, and whole wheat flour on the left.

Students grinding wheat:

Wheat being cooked with water to make a cerel.  (think Cream of Wheat cerel, but more oatmeal like in grain size).  Recipe HERE

Chris adding Almond Milk to the wheat, and then he added water to make it soupy.

Almond Milk Recipe HERE.

We also ate up some Cracked Wheat Cerel and served it warm with almond milk, cinnamon, butter, and brown sugar - it was super YUMMY!

Indeed - it has been a good week.

6 Dutch Babies

Today the 2nd period class is making Dutch Babies ( German Pancakes.)

First we have to put the oven to 450 degrees, then we put the butter in the pan and put it in the oven. Carefully take it out and try not to burn yourself.
Above: we mixed the batter and made sure we had no flour lumps.

Mrs.Hubbard helped us take out the butter so we didn't burn ourselfs.

The fineshed product was very puffy and was fun to make!

Chris has done some more mini-cantaloupe carving -  I love these little creatures!

7/8 A Good Day With Pumpkins

A Day of Cooking in Room A122

Pumpkin cookies. does that sound good? Well it did to Mrs. Hubbard and I have to admit it sounded a little gross to me. I do not like pumpkin pie so I thought the cookies were not going to taste good. I was definitely wrong. About half of the class added to much margarine so the batter did not turn out as it was suppose to so we had to double the recipe. Must be a thing, all the recipes my group has made the margarine has something wrong with it, whether it is the butter liquidizing or adding to much. The batter made way to much it felt like, and it was very thick. As Tristan said, " This batter is so thick it could be pasta!" Whatever that means. Kitchen 2's group was the only kitchen that did not mess up the batter.** Here Conner is smiling for only making one batch. Well maybe he isn't smiling as much as getting ready to hit a home run.

Here kitchen three is eating there dough instead of the cookies what we all do, when we don't want to wait for the cookies to come out of the oven.

So all in all it was a good cooking day in Family Consumer Sciences. With delicious pumpkin puree, pumpkin cookies, and pumpkin seeds. So much pumpkin!
See you next time in room A122.

-Ellie Waters

**Kitchen 5 had the recipe correct as well and a BIG THANK YOU to Garrett who caught
Mrs. Hubbard's mistake in which she had two different measurements of margarine on the recipe sheet.  Ooops!  Mrs. Hubbard!

7/8 Nutrients

Life Skills: Learning About Nutrients
By Eli Lapello

In Life Skills we have been learning about nutrients. Nutrients are needed in your life. The nutrients are carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, water, and fiber. We have been taking notes about these nutrients using a note sheet or a mind map. We are making a project on them. The project includes making a poster to hang in the hall. Also a power point will have to be made. These projects will have to be presented for a grade. This is all we have done for nutrients so far.

Here is an image of the mind map and the note sheet:
