7/8 Sauerkraut Making Gone Wrong

10/13/16
My Sauerkraut Experience
By Cecilia Ahrens

In life skills, we made sauerkraut. We cut up the outer leaves of a cabbage plant. It took a lot of leaves to fill up a tiny mason jar. We had them cut up small and then we seasoned them up with multiple spices. We put them into the jar and put half an onion into the jar. We waited a couple of weeks and then we finally ate it. The onion had mold on it and it smelled really bad. When we tried it, it tasted worse than it smelled. I thought that after they scrapped the mold off, it would be good. It just wasn’t. I would not make this again.

7/8 Working with Mountain Roots

October 2016

Sasha and the Mountain Roots Garden have been a wonderful addition to our classroom!  Students learn, harvest, and cut, cook, and eat food from right out side our doors! So Cool!  Thank you Mountain Roots!!!

7/8 Cantaloupe Carving

This was a fun side project in which students got to work with pairing knives and mini cantaloupe! We picked the cantaloupe from the gardens, but for the most part, it was not edible so students crafted mini jack-o-lanterns instead!

7/8 Food Stories

Food is not just about nutrients and feeding the body to do its job.  Food is also about connection, community, family, memories, friends, and many other good and sometimes challenging times.

The 7th & 8th graders are currently working on personal narratives that connect food to a memory or event in their lives.  Here they are hard at work:

7/8 Photos in Kitchen

Here are some photos of the 7th & 8th graders in action over the last few weeks in the Kitchens. They have been working so hard, cooking new things, challenging their boundaries on what they are willing to eat, learning to clean up the kitchens, measure, and communicate in their groups.  I am ever so proud of them!   -Mrs. Hubbard
